Practical Driving Test

Some parts of the driving test changed on December 4th 2017.

The Eyesight Test

You will have to pass an eyesight check.  This means you will have to be able to read a new style vehicle registration plate, new style registration plates start with 2 letters followed by 2 numbers (AB67 ABC), from a distance of 20 metres, or 20.5 metres if it is an old style registration plate.

The "Show Me, Tell Me" questions

You will be asked 2 vehicle safety questions, these are known as the "Show Me, Tell Me" questions.  These are asked to test a knowledge of basic safety tasks.  You will be asked the "Tell Me" question before you drive away from the test centre. The official You Tube videos can be found here.

 

The "Show Me" question will be asked while you are on the move, an example might be "When it's safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the rear windscreen?"  The official You Tube videos can be found here.

Your General Driving Ability

You will drive in different types of road and traffic conditions, You won't be asked to drive on motorways.  The examiner will give you directions to follow.

Pulling over at the side of the road.

You will be asked to find a safe place to stop and then move off when it is safe to do so on your test, these pull over and move away exercises will involve stopping normally on the left, a hill start and moving away from behind a parked vehicle.  You could also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

Reversing your vehicle.

The examiner will ask you to carry out one of the following exercises - 

Parallel park 

Bay park (reverse)

Bay park (drive forward into the bay, then reverse out)

Pull up on the right-hand side (pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse about 2 car lengths, rejoin the traffic).

Independent Driving.

The examiner will ask you to drive for approximately 20 minutes, following directions from traffic signs or directions from a Sat-Nav.  The examiner will explain this to you.

The examiner will provide the Sat-Nav and set it up for you, you won't be allowed to follow directions from your own Sat-Nav device.

If you are unsure, you will still be able to ask the examiner for confirmation of where you are going.
