Pull Up On The Right And Reverse
On the driving test, the examiner will ask you to "pull up on the right, in a safe place, look along the road for a safe, convenient and legal place to stop. The diagram below on the left shows a clear road, with plenty of room to pull up, safely on the right. The two examples, which are crossed out, show examples of where it would be wrong to park on the right.
After deciding on a safe place to stop, you should decide whether it is safe to cross over onto the right hand side of the road or whether you will have to wait on oncoming traffic, use the hazard routine (MSPSGL), to help you do this safely.
When you have stopped safely on the right, the examiner will ask you to reverse approximately 2 car lengths. Make sure it is safe all round before starting to reverse, look forward for oncoming vehicles, behind for any other vehicles approaching, also watch for pedestrians on your right hand side and make sure your car does not get too close to the kerb.
After reversing, the examiner will ask you to return to the left and drive on, when you are ready. Prepare your car in the normal way, more observations may be needed as you are stopped on the right hand side of the road. Start with your left blind spot, turn to your right checking all mirrors and the road ahead finish with your driver's blind spot, then check all your mirrors and the road ahead finishing in your left blind spot, before moving off.
